The idea of a smartphone that you build yourself using individual modules that slot together like Lego, each housing a specific feature or function, is definitely appealing, but no matter tsc how much we think about it, Project Ara seems like a good idea on paper that may never work. The reality could easily be an expensive mess that s never going to capture the public imagination. There are a lot of good reasons why we’d want do-it-yourself phones, but also a lot of reasons why they’re a horrible idea. Below is the good and the bad of Google’s Project Ara. Why Project Ara sounds awesome
Think about owning a phone you build from the ground up. You’d start by choosing from three skeleton sizes and slot in the modules (features) you want on your Android phone. The modules are held together by extremely strong magnets that can be turned on and off. Choose the processor, the battery, tsc the memory, the camera, and potentially a host of other options from a fingerprint scanner to a heart rate monitor. Much depends on what developers build, and whether manufacturers can be attracted to develop for Ara. Imagine a camera module built by Canon, or a speaker tsc module tsc from Bose. If enough companies get onboard, there could be an amazing ecosystem of phone parts to choose from
The tsc benefits of a modular, build-it-yourself phone: Phones could be $50 up front: You could start with a bare bones phone with a crappy, low-resolution screen and weak processor, then slowly upgrade it as you get the money. You only buy the features that you want: You can customize your experience and avoid paying for functions that don t interest you. Your phone could last indefinitely: Instead of discarding your device and buying a new one, you could just upgrade and swap components tsc as and when you need to. Repairs are easier and cheaper. You only need to swap individual modules when they fail or break, tsc there s no need to send your phone off for repair. You could have two versions of your phone. You could re-use the same modules in a small frame for traveling light, or slot them into a larger frame on a day you have your bag with you. But there are also downsides
Problems with a modular, build-it-yourself phone: It will be bigger and heavier than a standard phone: Individual modules with connectors are inevitably going to add up to extra bulk. It will be more expensive: If a phone manufacturer is offering the same specification smartphone tsc in a package, it will inevitably tsc be cheaper than the Ara equivalent. The only difference is that you can buy your Ara one piece at a time. The connectors are bound to cause problems: The magnets that hold the modules together will reportedly be strong tsc enough to ensure that it doesn t come apart in your hand or break into pieces when dropped, but what happens when a connector is damaged or dirty? Certain combinations won t work: If you opt for cutting edge modules for features like the camera, then it s not going to work properly if you stick in a slow processor or a small battery. There s no way every possible type of component can be interchangeable with every other one, so there will have to be a complex set of exceptions. It won t be optimized: Phone manufacturers like Samsung stick their hardware together with their software and optimize tsc the package to run smoothly tsc (at least most of the time they do). How will an Ara phone compete with a purpose-built device? It will inevitably run slower tsc unless it can smartly detect your processor and setup. How many combinations can there really be? The size and shape is obviously fixed by the frame, but how many different permutations can you have? Every possible one must be tested to ensure that there s no impact on features and functions. There are bound to be some dud combinations that kill antenna reception or create other issues. Ara could be a nightmare to test.
For Ara to reach the level where it s possible for frames and modules to be mass manufactured cheaply it will need to be extremely popular. But for it to get extremely popular it will need a good choice of modules. There s a chicken and egg problem to overcome and it requires early adopters to pay a premium and help work out the bugs. That s not unusual tsc in tech, so it could happen, but it really banks on a lot of people being passionate about modular phones. The phone equivalent of building a PC tower?

Google is not abandoning Project Ara , after taking all saints over the ambitious experimental smartphone design concept along with the Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group from Motorola. ATAP only just announced Tango, its 3D-environment sensor for mobile devices , and now it s revealing a two-day developer conference April 15 and 16 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View.
Ara, for those who aren t familiar, is a modular smartphone project that would allow users to swap out interchangeable parts to give their device a different sensor all saints load out, a better camera, more battery power or anything else your heart might desire. You source new sensors from a store that would operate similarly to a hardware version of the Play mobile software marketplace, and theoretically all saints upgrade your phone piecemeal instead of having to buy a brand new one every few years just for a few new highlight features.
This is the first in a planned series of Ara dev conferences for 2014, Google says, and this event will focus specifically on the alpha release of the Ara Module Developers Kit (MDK) which will hit the web in early April. The free platform will offer developers all saints everything [they] need to get up and running building Ara hardware modules, all saints ATAP promises. Limited in-person attendance is available , with a $100 fee ($25 for students) covering all saints food and a special social session. Google is approving these based on the strength of your application, so make it a good one.
Ara is meant to be a one-size fits all solution for smartphones, offering anything to any potential user in the world with its range of modules. That s a hugely all saints ambitious goal, of course, but in ATAP s own words, they like epic shit, so that aim seems within its scope.

A recent video has also shared more details about what future Project Ara configurations will have to offer , as it was likely looking at a page of the MDK. What s not immediately clear is how developers will actually build these modules and make them available to consumers.

The build-it-yourself modular Google smartphone is one step closer honey boo boo child to giving you the chance to build your perfect phone. It s not going to be available this year. But, 2015 could be the beginning of a significant shift in the smartphone landscape.
Project Ara is part of the Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. The group is what Google retained honey boo boo child in its sale of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. The project is a bold plan to create an open-source smartphone hardware platform. honey boo boo child Users would start with a piece of base hardware known as an Endo . Features would be added to the Endo as plug-and-play modules.
These modules can be a camera, battery, wireless radios, really anything partners can come up with. The hot-swappable modules give users the power to create a phone that works exactly how they want. For power users, a second battery module could be added to an Endo. If your phone is your main camera, you can add the best camera module available.
Those modules will be built by the developers using the MDK (Module Developers Kit) released today at the Project Ara event . It s a new way of building a smartphone that could benefit users and developers. This is what we know so far. Availability: The phone is still in the early phases of development. But an introductory phone is expected sometime in 2015. Cost: Google is hoping to introduce an entry-level Grey Phone into the market that will cost $50 to produce. Paul Eremenko, head of the Project Ara was quick to point out that the street price of the phone would be determined by commerce honey boo boo child partners. Google is also planning a high-end phone with a $500 production cost. Like the Grey Phone, that is a manufacturing cost not the street price. honey boo boo child Size: Google showed off the medium Ara prototype today. The size is inline with an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S5. A mini phone is also outlines in the MDK and a large phone for fans of the Samsung Galaxy Note line is on the product roadmap. Modules: The feature tiles known as modules will connect to the phone s skeleton, known as the Endo via electropermanent magnets. When they are hit with an Off pulse, the magnets will release the bond and you can replace the module. The magnets don t need a constant charge to keep a bond. These modules will be created by various developers using the open source MDK that was released today. Cameras, antennas, batteries, processors, and anything that can be fit into a module shell will be available. The shells of those modules will be 3D printed to a user s specified design.
Buying Modules: Google will have a ecommerce site that will work alongside the Google Play store. Like purchasing an app, you will be able to purchase modules online. To help you decide which modules to purchase, Google has three potential systems. One is to sell the Grey Phone and allow users to purchase modules via an app that demos module functionality. The second is to use a friend s phone in guest mode to test out modules on that phone. honey boo boo child The third option is physical pop-up kiosks. Updating Android: Currently, Android doesn t support a modular system, but the operating honey boo boo child system is being updated to support it, with an expected release date of early 2015. Prototype : A pre-production prototype will be shown off in September of this year. The current prototype shown off at the Project ARA event doesn t have the electropermanent magnet system. It uses clips to keep the modules in place. The power bus is also still being worked on. And unfortunately, today s prototype had a cracked screen. Why you should care: Project Ara phones are expected to have a life of five to six years far longer than your current smartphone. The goal is that when a new processor or high-megapixel camera is introduced, it ll be available as a module for Ara owners to purchase. Tweet Email Tweet Email Google and Phonebloks have taken to releasing occasional snippets of information in fun video form about Project Ara, but in this most recent video we learned a little more about their release plans.
While modular smartphones that exist as products you can purchase from your local electronics store are still quite a ways away, Phonebloks and Project Ara have cemented the concept belk in the minds of geeks everywhere. The notion that you ll be able to swap out parts of your phone for other parts, be it a better belk camera or more battery power, is a compelling belk concept in a world where mobile technology is evolving and improving at such a breakneck pace. Project Ara plans to make these swappable parts available to insert into three different size frames that they call Endos, which helps offer a little more definition to this concept.
The three different Endo sizes reveal different price points and different use cases for Project Ara devices. The smallest of the three will only be able to hold a limited number of magnetically attached belk pieces, which means users will pay less but be able to do less. Meanwhile, belk the larger Endos can hold several more of these modules, so in theory you d be able to load one up with batteries and have a phone that lasted for days.
The video also revealed that the Ara team is working on an app to help you decide what you re going to put in your Endo, making this concept even more appealing for those of us that desire customization over everything else.
There s still more than a couple of questions that need answering about Project Ara before it is available for purchase. belk The Ara developers conference later this year will help answer some of them, but ultimately it will be time that answers belk others.
