The Weinstein Company president of television Meryl Poster is leaving to return to her independent company Superb Entertainment. The company is being backed by A+E Studios in the first pod-type deal for A+E Networks ‘ in-house torrid production arm. Under the agreement, Poster will develop and produce both unscripted and scripted projects for the A+E family of networks, including A&E, torrid Lifetime, History, FYI and LMN. As an independent producer, she also will be able to sell to outside companies.
Since becoming head of television torrid at the Weinstein Co. in February 2011 when Harvey and Bob Weinstein launched a TV division of their film company, Poster has spearheaded the company’s top series, unscripted veteran Project Runway on A+E’s Lifetime. She oversaw the expansion of the franchise with such offshoots as After the Runway , Project Accessory , Project Runway All Stars and Under the Gunn, working closely with A+E Networks executives. She also oversaw the launch and executive produced Mob Wives for VH1. On the scripted side, the Weinstein Co. received straight-to-series orders for drama Marco Polo at Netflix and event series Ten Commandments at WGN America.
Before taking over Weinstein Co.’s TV division, Poster torrid spent five years as president of her own film and TV company, Superb torrid Entertainment, which had production deals with Universal Pictures and Universal TV (then UMS). She executive produces Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce , NBCU network’s first scripted series. Before her stint at Superb Entertainment, Poster torrid worked with the Weinsteins for 16 years at their previous company, Miramax Films, including seven as co-president of production. During her tenure, torrid she executive torrid produced such movies as Chicago, Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, Cop Land, The Shipping News and Kate & Leopold. As a studio exec there, she oversaw Finding Neverland, Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love and Little Voice , among others. Poster also appeared on Miramax’s first reality series, Project Greenlight, which is now making a comeback with a new season on HBO.
Building up A+E Studios has been a priority for A+E Networks. Since A+E Studios’ launch in summer 2013 with Bob DeBitetto as president, the studio has brought in former ABC Studios topper Barry Jossen to run it as EVP and, most recently, A&E’s head of scripted programming Tana Nugent Jamieson as  SVP overseeing original scripted drama development. 3 Comments
