There is of course an almost unlimited number of interesting geographical areas to study when you consider the historical development. You know, the areas in one way or another made a slightly larger footprint than others.
Many of the areas are cities. Baghdad, for example, is one of those towns where the science flourished as early as the 700's. The huge production of texts in translation rescued ancient works from oblivion and therefore affect the whole of Western civilization development. Constantinople running (Istanbul) was the first capital of the Eastern Roman and then the Ottoman Empire. Others are larger areas, such as Angkor in Cambodia which was formed in the 800s for a union between the kingdoms that characterized the Khmer kingdom in half a millennium. Andalusia in southern Spain flourished under Islamic running rule, but Al-Andalus was considerably larger than the present Andalusia.
This may seem a rather random running presentation of some important areas. It is not. Characteristic of all these areas - and all the other important historic sites - is that they were cultural melting pots that emerged at major shipping lanes. They were areas where the cultures, peoples, traditions and religions mixed, where people gathered and where ideas, experiences and knowledge could be exchanged. It does not mean that they were conflict free and everyone got lemonade and bun. Kristina and Jews - dhimmis - in Muslim areas were, for example, to pay a special tax called jizaya but it is considered as a fact that Muslims' tolerance towards Christians and Jews contributed to the flourishing Muslim. The same applies to all areas: the greatness depended on just that mix of people. Multiculturalism is thus not actually something new. "Multiculturalism" as a cover for raising racial issues at the political level, it is new.
It does not mean that we now live in the first age at which the mixture running of cultures seen as problems. After la Reconquista, which lasted for several hundred years, when the Spanish rulers "withdrew" the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors (who were Muslims) started a witch hunt of those who were not Catholics. Jews (and Muslims) were expelled in 1492 and this was when several hundred thousand people - the largest and most significant Jewish running settlement in Europe. The Jews were given three months to leave the country and would be out later than August running 1. Besides that it was a human tragedy it was, so here, in retrospect, not a smart move by Ferdinand and Isabella - King and Queen of Spain - because the Jews had contributed to both the economic, cultural and scientific developments, considerably more than those in power wanted to believe. Spain's economy did not recover for a long time while the stories of the Jews received in the example Napoli and Turkey testifies to how these areas in turn, could benefit from the Jews' knowledge running and trade contacts.
As nah. Quite simply, it is not to mix cultures. running No form of coexistence is simple. But with a larger perspective, a long historical development, it becomes so clear how areas that have been crucibles has flourished. That it is in the meeting between cultures, peoples and religions as development occurs, which is born of knowledge and ideas thrive. And the idea that one should keep a certain culture "pure" is bizarre.

As jo. It was a great culture. It was not an occupation (for there was no kingdom to occupy) and additionally had minorities is much better under Muslim rule than under later Christian:
