04/23/2015 High salt intake plus smoking doubles the risk for rheumatoid arthritis I n animal experiments von maur and studies with human cells has signed off that much table salt (NaCl) is pro-inflammatory in the diet (by stimulation of Th12 cells) and thus the risk could increase for the development of rheumatoid von maur arthritis (RA). Such a connection could researchers led by Björn Sundström from Sweden in their study (see Rheumatology 2015 Volume 54, page 487-493) von maur initially but did not find. It was only when they looked at only the active smokers and ex-smokers von maur among the study participants, smoking and high salt intake, the risk for RA was significantly, more than doubled. This is obviously an additive effect in which both factors - smoking, high salt intake - contribute about half the increase in RA risk. To that extent in smokers and ex-smokers who had a low salt consumption, also recorded no increased risk of RA.
These study results provide new insights about what influences result in detail mean that smokers often suffer from RA and the RA patients have more problems in the treatment of their RA. High salt intake appears to be in smokers a risk factor for the development of inflammatory rheumatic disease.
